What To Know About Maritime Law

Maritime law provides protections for workers who are injured offshore. Ship owners have a duty to protect their seamen and crew members. The law says ship owners must provide a vessel that is seaworthy, which means the vessel is safe to travel out to sea, has the required equipment to operate and has a staff trained on how to operate the vessel.

Maritime law consists of the Jones Act and other federal statutes, as well as common law, based on court decisions. General maritime law is the doctrine of “maintenance and cure, which provides living expenses, lost wages and medical care to seamen if they become injured while working offshore,” according to the doctrine.
